Let's put the cards on the table right away. There are a dozen reasons why musicians of all ages come from all over the world to be part of the Dance Orchestra. But the most important reason is: it's just incredibly fun!

Led by Ilya Shneyveys, Alan Bern and other stars of today's international klezmer music scene, in the Dance Orchestra you not only learn beautiful and exciting repertoire, you also learn a way of playing as an orchestra that's hard to imagine if you haven't already experienced it. Forget the usual orchestra experience of being glued to the notes! In the Dance Orchestra, we learn to spontaneously create arrangements that have an electrifying energy in a two-way, intense communication with the dancers. No matter whether we start from the written note or from something we learn by ear, we make a new musical creation every time we play.

And what would a Dance Orchestra be without dancers? So, after we've learned some new music, we try it out with the participants of the Dance Workshop that runs parallel to our workshop. Then, after a day of learning and experimenting, the evenings are for jam sessions in small and large groups, getting to know one another and the dancers, and special events. All of this culminates in the Gala Dance Ball, when the combined energies of the orchestra and the dancers just raises the roof.

In keeping with this year's special topic - The Other israel: New Spaces - we'll be exploring classic Yiddish dance music, newly created Yiddish dance music, and music of other cultural traditions in Israel today. If you're already a regular of the Dance Orchestra workshop, we look forward to seeing you again this summer! And if you're someone who loves to play music with other people and loves new musical discoveries, we really want to encourage you to give this summer's Dance Orchestra workshop a try. You won't regret it!
