Dance Workshop
Aug 14 – 18 @Tanzwerkstatt
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.
With Andreas Schmitges (Koordination), Ilana Cohen, Nir de Volff
Artist-in-Residence: Medhat Aldabaal, Sayumi Yoshida, Mark Kovnatskiy, Sarah Myerson
Each year, the Dance Workshop is one of the highlights of Yiddish Summer. Why? Because although traditional Yiddish dance is closely related to many other folk dance traditions of Western and Eastern Europe, it's also also unique in its own way: aside from the steps, each dancer also uses arm and upper body gestures to express his or her individual feelings and to communicate with the other dancers. You'll be dancing to live music played by a 35-piece orchestra led by Ilya Shneyveys, Alan Bern and other stars of today's klezmer music world. The sound is incredible!
In keeping with the theme of this year's workshop - The Other Israel: New Spaces - this year's Dance Workshop features two very special guest teachers. Nir de Volff (IL/D) is a shooting star of the dance world, famous for new choreography that weds traditional folk dance and contemporary dance styles. Specially for Yiddish Summer Weimar, Nir will create an exciting new project: "New Folk Dances" that draw on both Israeli Folk Dance and Yiddish traditional dance, to be taught for the first time ever in this Dance Workshop! Our second guest teacher is Ilana Cohen (IL), a renowned dancer, dance teacher and choreographer who specializes in the different ethnic dance traditions that contribute to Israeli Folk Dance. Ilana will be our guide to the Yemenite tradition, one of the oldest and most important influences on Israeli Folk Dance. And we are thrilled to announce that Medhat Aldaabal, who taught Dabke during YSW 2017, will return this year as an Artist-in-Resident, as well as performing in the new dance piece COME AS YOU ARE.
Rounding out the program, we will also watch short films showing Yiddish and other dance traditions, reflect together on what we're learning - and dance to live music every night! Join us this year for a truly unique Dance Workshop!
